This is an incredible environment which suppasses, in my view, that of the big Sci-fi games such as Doom and Halo et al. This is another place that recognises the need to address all possible senses to make the experience as real as possible. Sights and sounds make this feel like you are walking through the film set of Alien.

This is the first place I have come across that asks you to go into your World>Environment Setting>Environment Editor, Advanced Sky button, New button and edit the settings to match the numbers given in their note card. This process only needs to be once but once you save the new settings, you can reselect it once you return. Your default settings are available always for you to select when you leave the ship.

It took me about 15 mins to get that done and wondered if it was worth the effort. Without doubt, it is. While I was in the ship's bowels I toggled between the default and my "Doomed Ship" settings; the difference was incredible.

So? We have a great environment... What's this place about? Obviously it is here to attract the Sci-fi crowd to RP their Sci-fi fantasies, whatever they may be. RP is strongly advised although it is not compulsory. During my two visits to the sim, everything I heard was RPed. They want to keep the mood and atmosphere that they have worked hard to achieve so they ask that you dress accordingly. Free space suits are available at the entrance to the sim. I forgot I had my very expensive silver latex chest-exposing space suit so I wore the freebie instead. Very fetching!

BDSM toys/equipment/scenarios here are cleverly integrated into the environment. For example, cryogenic chambers set regularly along the corridors and various biological tanks in the medical lab, act as cages. Restrict & rape, by every alien (especially by those with lots of tentacles) across the universe, are available here and if you want to be impregnated by aliens, this service is available too.

This place is really a huge maze. You will easily get lost the first few times you visit and I suspect it will take time to get to know the place. There are some secrets and some fantastic effects that will surprise you...

City of Lost Angels (CoLA)

They market themselves as the original Dark RP/Combat/Sex sim. It has a huge population with a traffic count of 52727 as of today.

You can see from their description they cover wide variety of interests. I have spent many hours in this place camming around and listening to the open RP going on. One thing strikes me, considering their description is the lack of obvious sex and sex related stuff about, hinted/implied or otherwise.

I don't think of CoLA as a dirty or a scary place. Yes, there is the porn shop and the dodgy bar but nothing oppressive or putting me on edge. I asked in IMed 6 or 7 heavy RPers where any BDSM stuff was and was given short shrift...

I returned to the underground station (the main landing point), found the staff noticeboard and IMed a member of staff directly. I got taken out of City of Lost Angels to one of the adjacent sims. OK. OK. I am getting the gist. Get this...

CoLA is one sim and is the central hub for the surrounding sister sims, lots of them. This organisation is HUGE. These other sims are still considered to be CoLA but just suburbs of it. It is in these sister sims that you will find specific BDSM places.

One of the factions, The Coven (Vampires) occupies over half of one of these sister sims. I was given a tour of their place by one of its members. You know, these RP sims are undercover Hard Limit BDSM places, if you want them to be... We have vampires impaling, torturing, piercing, sacrificing and drinking blood from their victims. They do have BDSM pose balls and props yes, but like any good role play, it is the creativity and the imagination that really matters.

I was taken to other places in the vastness of CoLA sims, some very dirty and murky places for some serious kinks to be satisfied. I think I would have travelled the length and breadth of CoLA for months before I found them myself.

This is a community entrenched in role play. Long running themes set up by the Game Masters and well as chance encounters with fraction members make this a thriving, exciting community to live in. In my few days here as an observer, I have been quite caught up with their water shortage problem. The bars are shut and the vampires, well, they don't drink water do they...

Midian City

Midian City is a role playing enforced sim (2 actually) where you are likely to witness strong sexual (incl. BDSM) content as well as violence and forced fantasies. What does this mean? After you have TPed in at the taxi rank, get yourself geared up with an observer's tag and keep your mouth shut or role play, the choice is yours. And when you get inside it, don't be shocked at anything you see. Consent is required to engage in sexual/violent role play; you will not be made to play with someone unless you want to.

Midian is an offshore island and was, centuries ago, an isolated leper colony. Over time and with changing needs, it became a town like every other. It was connected to the mainland by a bridge that spanned the Quinntukhat river. In 2013, during a great war, some dodgy experimenting happened on the island that was intended to end the war. Sadly, it went very wrong, with leaking radiation, the city became uninhabitable. The bridge was blocked, communication along this road was closed and the island became alone and forgotten, again. Eventually tho some brave souls, mainly criminals escaping the law on the mainland, secretly found a way back onto the island and slowly brought their pestilence, violence, perversions and corruption with them.

They are very particular about your character and your powers being stuck firmly in reality according to the sim's story rather than any flight of fancy. They don't want any non-humanoids here, with the exception of real animals avatars... Those that behave and look fully like an animal, a dog, cat etc. They also explore the notion of some RL mysteries; werewolves, vampires etc are accepted but under strict conditions. Just like RL, these creatures are not known to the public, they do not walk down the street with their fangs hanging out or their body hair sprouting out of their shirt. They are secret beings, they hide and pretend they live normal lives until the need to transform and attack overcomes them. And even when they do so, no-one is ever there with a Canon IXUS 70 catching the moment or openly discussing their encounter. They allow child avatars here; they use the tag "Orphan". They can be involved in the role play but no sexual activities are allowed.

As I sit alone on this dirty broken bench on the main street, the environment around makes me want to run back to safety, somewhere. I can hear role play, not violent or sexual, just in keeping with low life, desperate, hungry people; the carpet in the shop behind me has blood stains covering it and the music is raucous, aggressive and erratic.

There are 19 official factions and tons of "Interest groups" that anyone can join and many other secret ones that you can get into once you get deeper into this community. Reading their information, each group appears to have a clearly defined role for the good of the sim.

The Yakuza

Crime runs rampant in the streets. Many are loose knit gangs, looking out for "number one". The Yakuza, though, are a close family organization. On the outside, one sees upper-class snobbery, something clearly out of place in the dark city of Midian. But look closer and gaze into their eyes, and you can see something more sinister behind the facade of silk and jewels. They are the Yakuza. The Masters of Torture, Drugs, and Crime.

Midian City is not a combat sim but it runs the Midian Combat System (MCS) to help role play rather than replace it. It ain't no shoot 'em up, this place.

Remember what I said about this sim being based in "realism"? You are can have sex here where you would have sex in RL. Generally speaking, this is not in front of the pub at 2.00pm. Behind the pub? Well maybe! So in Midian City, having sex in the open is fine, but make sure it is own a dark dirty alley or find a back room somewhere and make sure you are RPing!

Toxian City (Toxia)

My usual method of walking up to an officer of a sim or group to get a tour around a community was proving ineffectual with Dark RP areas. I had spent a couple of days hanging around these sims trying to get someone to give me a tour but I was usually met with various versions of “Fuck off, missy”. I smiled and carried on, understanding the nature of Dark RP, I accepted that some folk just behave this way. A change of tactic was needed.

I walked towards a sleazy looking bar, nodded at the smoking character loitering in the doorway and past the flashing broken neon signs hanging askew on the walls. Having parked my arse on a stool, I breathed in deeply and role played like buggery. I ordered a drink from the barman, tipped him, ordered some more and slowly got drunk. Over time, I became an underpaid over worked reporter for the local rag, sent out to find a story to fill some column inches. This reporter was looking for a man to take her somewhere to find her story and secretly, she hoped afterwards, he would take her too. It worked. I got my tour guide.

Toxian City is a hell-hole. It’s mutant, sick and mad residents have carved out a grimy existence in this dangerous abandoned slum. An earthquake many years ago ripped its bowels apart, releasing toxic waste materials that had been foolishly buried underground by the local chemical plants. This acrid stench has hung black and dark over the city ever since like a watchful mother demon monitoring the fruits of her labours below.

My eyes hurt after I left this city. I am sure it wasn’t as a result of my drunken role playing, more likely it was the strain of trying to spot things around the sim; it is Dark, in more ways than one. They have gone to great lengths to create an atmosphere suitable for the role play characters that they want to encourage in. This is a place for vampires, demons, elves and werewolves, for nekos, angels, mutants and monsters to role play their hearts out, if they had one.

Factions in the sim (9 of them altogether), headed by Games Masters (GM), allow for gangs to keep an edge about the place. Walking down the streets I was aware of a sense of trepidation and of tension; I stuck closely to my guide. Anyone in character is welcome to join one of these gangs in their fight for survival and territory. The GMs are there as security for players as well as providing leadership for scripted role play. On occasions the GMs get together and plan a mass assault on one of the monsters that might rise from the sewers. It is only when the strength and power of the gangs combine and work together, that these mega monsters can be defeated. Nice to know that even in hell, team work and co-operation works!

My guide took me to the headquarters of one of the gangs, The Ryders, and introduced me to a vampire(ss?) member who showed me around their base. The garage was well in keeping with the theme of the sim, rough looking and barely functional. A few motorbikes here, some spare tyres there, upstairs some torn and broken sofas and chairs. A BDSM kit (racks and torture chairs) can be found here and is used in capture role play. The factions are set up along two types. Some are race based and only allow that race in as a member. The Kindred Alliance (KA) is vampires only; Pack is canines only and Prowlers felines only whereas some other groups are based on Good and Evil. Shadow is evil and Righteous is, yes you’ve guessed, good.

It is possible to come to the sim and not be involved at all with any of the groups, preferring to stay independent and free. Just like I did, role play opportunities will arise and will take you deep into the storyline you create.

There are two main BDSM areas that anyone can use, so long as open chat is kept character. The Pit is the base for the Shadows. If you want to see what a room in hell could look like, come have a gander at this. It reminds me of Dolcett land. Grapples hang from the ceiling, ready and waiting for those captured to be hooked through the chest and roasted slowly over the pit of hell. BDSM toys are dotted around the place, keeping people secure until it is their turn to die.

The other BDSM play area is The Dungeon which accessed through the porn shop. Two huge rooms, one above the other, contain lots of top quality BDSM toys from Deviant. The blackness and suppression of the sim reeks everywhere and especially here.

I like the edginess of the Toxia; its large creative membership means you encounter role play at almost every corner. RP is taken seriously here and contributes hugely to the scary and tension-filled atmosphere.
